Exclusive: IPL 2026 Best Openers XI for the Indian T20I Team
From Yashasvi Jaiswal to Vaibhav Suryavanshi, explore the best openers playing XI for Team India in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026.
If there is one set of players that the Indian team will never see any shortage of supply, it is the openers. There are 10 teams in the Indian Premier League, but such is the quality of the Indian openers that we have more than 20 solid openers continuously making a mark in the T20 world. While most are playing as openers, some quality openers like Ishan Kishan, Devdutt Padikkal, etc., are required to play in the middle-order.
The 2026 edition of the Indian Premier League has already seen some of the Indian openers taking the tournament by storm. There was a time when 50-60 was considered a solid score in the Powerplay. But the Indian openers have redefined Powerplay hitting this year, with 85-90 runs being a general norm in the Powerplay. And mind you, this has only been possible by Indian openers, as most of the overseas openers like Markram, Marsh, Head, Allen, etc., have underperformed.
With so many quality Indian openers in the team, it brings us to a very unique topic of discussion, and that’s forming an XI comprising only Indian openers. Yes, such is the quality of the Indian openers currently that we have at least 11 of them who can make it to the Indian team, or are in contention of making it. So, given the solid options we have in front of us, let’s look at the IPL 2025 Best openers XI that are in contention for the Indian T20I team.
IPL 2026 Best Openers Playing XI Discussed
If we talk about the two best openers that everybody, including the Indian team, dreams of having as the opening combination, it’s Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Abhishek Sharma. Both are undoubtedly the most aggressive batters in the Indian Premier League, striking at more than 200, almost always. If the pitch has even a little bit of assistance for batters, they spare none. However, Vaibhav, in general, plays so late that he counters any swing or slow ball deliveries with such effectiveness, and only a false shot can get him out on most occasions. Abhishek, in general, is more dominating in nature than Vaibhav.
The third opener on the list is Yashasvi Jaiswal, and this is one batter who has constantly performed in the Indian Premier League for the last few years, but has never got his due. He is one batter who should be playing in all 3 formats for Team India, but is somehow limited to the Test format. As the IPL ends, hopefully, Team India and BCCI realise the importance of Yashasvi Jaiswal, and what value he can bring to the table in all 3 formats.
Fourth and fifth openers on the list are the current top-order of the Indian team – Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson. Ishan has started from where he left off for the Indian team with a continuous flow of runs for the SRH team. Whereas Sanju had failures in the first three matches, he then covered up nicely in the next two matches. With both players now in good form, the Indian team will be a happy bunch right now.
PBKS’s Underrated Openers
Sixth and seventh openers on the list is Punjab Kings duo of Prabsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya. Started playing together as openers from last year, and this uncapped batting duo has not only given consistent starts to the Punjab Kings but also made them stronger. While Priyansh is a naturally attacking batter, and delivers more often than not, Prab is also aggressive, but always likes to play long, with a very low percentage of false shots.
For number 8 and 9, we have the Gujarat Titans batting duo, Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan. In the world of belligerent batters like Vaibhav and Abhishek, Sai Sudharsan and Shubman Gill have found success by playing traditional cricketing shots. If building your innings is an art, Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan will be right at the top this year alongside Virat Kohli. Both play traditional risk-free cricketing shots more often than not, and are surprisingly able to hit at 150 and above with this approach. Having a couple of such batters in the team gives you a hedge when tough wickets are played on.
Finally, we move on to the two experienced openers, and those are KL Rahul and Ruturaj Gaikwad. While KL Rahul has been playing as an opener in the IPL for more than a decade, Ruturaj has often been a performer for the CSK. However, this year hasn’t been the way they would have liked, but as they say, Form is temporary, Class is permanent. So, hoping KL and Ruturaj will come back to form in the second half of the tournament.
