KL Rahul expected to lead in our best predicted retained players list for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) for IPL 2025.  

When we talk about Lucknow Super Giants, there is one name that is currently under the focus with the IPL 2025 retentions in mind. Yes, we are talking about KL Rahul, who is regarded as one of the greatest batters in the Indian Premier League. KL Rahul is currently under focus after his heated arguments with the LSG owner, Sanjeev Goenka during IPL 2024 matches, but a recent productive meeting with the owner changed the team retention dynamics.

Until before the meeting, there were speculations that KL Rahul is contemplating a move outside Lucknow Super Giants with RCB as his main target for IPL 2025. However, the meeting with Mr. Sanjeev Goenka changes the retention dynamics completely. It is now almost confirmed that KL Rahul won’t move out of LSG with the management expected to offer him the highest salary bracket along with the Captaincy.

But set aside KL Rahul, the LSG team anyway has a lot of quality players that also deserve the retention. But bless the IPL 2025 Retention rules, which may not allow the teams to retain more than 4-6 players. So, in that sense, which other players will be under the radar of Lucknow Super Giants from the retention point of view? Well, let’s consider the best-case possibility, and look at the retained players list for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) ahead of IPL 2025 Auction.  

LSG Retained Players List Decoded – IPL 2025

Now, we for sure know that KL Rahul will be the first-choice player for Lucknow Super Giants from a retention perspective. This also means, KL Rahul will be awarded the highest-price bracket, and that should ideally be INR 20 Cr assuming teams are given a 130 Cr purse. With an increase in purse to 130 Cr, it is natural for teams to have their best players at a salary of 20 Cr, an increase of approximately 25% from the current price.

Aside from KL Rahul, LSG management will have no second thoughts in retaining Nicholas Pooran, who has been a true match-winner not just for LSG, but also for teams across the world including his country, West Indies. Pooran played amazingly well in IPL 2024 where he amassed 499 runs at an average of 62.4 and a stunning strike rate of 178.2. Not a single player in the IPL 2024 has managed to score such quick runs at a breathtaking average of 62. 

Now, with KL Rahul and Pooran as the first-choice retentions, the next in line should be the uncapped player Mayank Yadav. Mayank impressed everyone with his sheer pace and accuracy in the few matches he played in IPL 2024. In the 4 matches that Mayank played in IPL 2024, he could manage 7 wickets at a superb economy rate of 6.9. But what stood out for him was his natural pace-building skill along with hitting the balls on a right length. With Mayank still an uncapped player, LSG won’t have to shell big on him at the moment.    

Ravi Bishnoi vs Marcus Stoinis

Finally, for the fourth spot, the LSG team shall be in dilemma to go after an all-rounder and star player like Marcus Stoinis, or after India’s primary wrist spinner Ravi Bishnoi. Bishnoi as we remember was also retained by LSG in IPL 2022 Mega Auction. Since then, his stars have only risen with some good performances in the IPL, and for the Indian team. While Marcus offers more as a player, retaining Bishnoi might be more value for money as compared to buying him in the Auction. Whereas getting Stoinis in the Auction will be a better move.

However, If at all more than 5 players are allowed, Marcus Stoinis will be the player next in line from a retention perspective. Finally, if six players are there to retain, SLG will mostly go after Quinton de Kock, and thus strengthen the top-order for the Lucknow Super Giants. Hopefully, six players are allowed to retain, or a 5+1 combination with 1 being uncapped, then LSG will be happy to go into the IPL 2025 Mega Auction.
