Asia Cup 2025 Snubbed but Stellar IPL’s Best Players Missing XI
From Yashasvi Jaiswal’s explosive IPL form to Shreyas Iyer’s mid-das touch, discover the IPL 2025 star players missing from India’s Asia Cup Team squad. Should they have made the cut?
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially announced the squad for Team India for the upcoming 2025 Asia Cup 2025. Barring a few surprises, the squad is on the expected lines, and since only 15 players are allowed, there are many potential misses from the squad that we, as fans, may feel disappointed about. No matter how hard we try, considering the 15-player limit, there will be a few misses from the squad.
Moreover, it’s always difficult to please the fans across the spectrum as some or the other will feel disappointed at the selection. For example, there is this Yashasvi Jaiswal fandom section that may feel Jaiswal was more deserving. Similarly, there will also be the fandom of Shreyas Iyer, Riyan Parag, KL Rahul, etc., who may also feel their favourite player was more deserving. No matter how hard we try, there are bound to be criticisms.
Having said that, the absence of Shreyas Iyer and Yashasvi Jaiswal was the most shocking thing when the squad was announced. Jaiswal is a naturally aggressive player, and his batting is more suited to T20s and ODIs than Tests. But we should salute the selectors, who have somehow managed to keep Yashasvi Jaiswal from the formats where he can be more successful. Absolute legendary stuff from the selectors!
Why did the Indian Team select Shubman Gill above Yashasvi Jaiswal?
However, Jaiswal’s absence may be linked to Shubman Gill’s rise in Indian cricket. Shubman Gill is projected as the new poster boy of the Indian team, and a successor to Virat Kohli in all three formats. He was appointed as the Captain of the Test team before the England series, and has now been appointed as the Vice-Captain of the T20I team. He is also projected to lead the ODI side once Rohit retires. So, between Gill and Jaiswal, selectors are going ahead with Shubman Gill, who seems to be their poster-boy and all-format player.
But not all is lost for Yashasvi Jaiswal or Shreyas Iyer. One can ignore quality, however much they want, but quality will shine sooner or later. So is the case with Yashasvi Jaiswal, who will be back in the side, and will represent the Indian team in all three formats. But for now, let’s focus on the best XI based on Indian Premier League stats that will miss being a part of the Asia Cup 2025 for Team India.
Starting with the two best openers missing from the Asia Cup 2025 squad, we have Yashasvi Jaiswal, whom we already discussed, and Sai Sudharsan, who was the Orange Cap winner in IPL 2025. Both have been quite consistent in the Indian Premier League, and have been performing exceptionally well in the tournament. But given India already have Abhishek, Sanju, and Gill, Jaiswal and Sai will unfortunately miss being a part of the Asia Cup 2025.
Rinku Singh and Shivam Dube Above Shreyas Iyer is Baffling
Coming to the middle-order, we have KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, and Rishabh Pant. All three are unfortunate to miss the bus for the Asia Cup. KL Rahul, who primarily plays as an opener, has also adapted his game for the middle-order. If not for Jitesh, KL Rahul as a middle-order batter would not have been a bad option. Pant, meanwhile, is not well. He is out of action for a few weeks, and is likely to miss the India vs West Indies Test series.
Aside from these two, if there is one player who should be considered amongst the most unfortunate to miss the Asia Cup, it has to be Shreyas Iyer. Iyer has revamped his batting completely, and has mastered the short-ball problem. If we have seen his batting in IPL 2025, we can see the confidence with which he batted. Hence, it’s quite shocking to see India opting for out-of-form Rinku Singh and Shivam Dube over Shreyas Iyer, who deserved it much more.
Talking about the finisher all-rounders, the Indian team will be without three emerging players, who have done well in whatever opportunities they have had. The names are Riyan Parag, Nitish Reddy, and Washington Sundar. One can say India already have Hardik and Axar, so the services of an additional all-rounder may be redundant. This is true, but that doesn’t mean there is a lack of quality in these three all-rounders. They have been performing well in the IPL, and sooner or later, they will play in T20Is as well.
Potent Bowling Lineup Missing
Finally, talking about the bowlers, India will be without three good bowlers, and those are Prasidh Krishna, Mohammed Siraj, and Ravi Bishnoi. Sure, Kuldeep and Varun are better spinners than Bishnoi, but Bishnoi is no mug. However, Bishnoi’s recent form may have been a hurdle to select him. Prasidh and Siraj are also quality bowlers, and the only place for them was that of Harshit Rana. Between the three, Harshit’s bowling is more adapted for T2O cricket as he has more variations. Hence, Prasidh and Siraj won’t be a big miss in the Asia Cup 2025.

So, that’s about the snubbed but stellar playing XI to miss the Asia Cup 2025. Overall, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer will be the biggest misses from the squad. But such is the strength of this Indian team that even if India sends an alternate squad, it will be more competent as the first one.
